Dorohedoro is a great anime series prepared by MAPPA studio and published on Netflix. Dorohedoro is one of the favorite anime worked on by the Mappa studio, just like Banana Fish And Dororo. Netflix published the anime in May 2020. It quickly gained a huge fan base. After the successful first season, fans of the series are starting to wonder about Dorohedoro season 2.

So, will there be a second season, what will the storyline be like, and when will it be out?

This well-rated series has 12 episodes published so far and managed to get an above average score of 8.1 on IMDb. When I see the comments from the audience, I can say that this anime is one of the most successful anime released in 2020. Let’s start with Dorohedoro Season 2 expectations going forward.

How is the Storyline of Dorohedoro Season 2?

Dorohedoro is set in a world called Hole. There live humans and Magic Users. Magic users kill Hole residents and terrorize the streets of Hole. It’s a very cruel world, and its inhabitants fear for their lives every day.

Caiman is the main character here, he was human before being corrupted by a Magic User and becoming amnesiac. His face turned into that of a reptile. The series is about him searching for his past because he doesn’t remember anything from it.

He has a partner named Nikaido. Together they question other Magic Users before killing them to learn their history.

Dorohedoro season 2 will bring many new challenges for Caiman as he will get closer to his past. Magic Users will be even more angry because Caiman and Nikaido will continue to kill Magic Users to find out about their past and get revenge.

Not only Caiman, but also Nikaido will be in big trouble for joining as his partner in crime. Many new enemies will appear to make his plans even more difficult for Caiman.

But his ambition to find out about his past life will not diminish in the least. Fans are wondering if Caiman will meet new people who will help him seek justice and be able to do so in the next season?

Will There Be a Dorohedoro Season 2?

The final episode of the first season of Dorohedoro premiered globally on Netflix on May 28, 2020. Even though two years have passed, Dorohedoro still hasn’t been renewed for season 2.

As of today July 5, 2022, Studio MAPPA or Netflix have remained mum about the new season decision. Sometimes it takes years to update an anime for a new season.

The same goes for popular anime like Tower of God or Kaifuku Jutsushi no Yarinaoshi. The much more popular anime from Dorohedoro are also waiting for updates.

Although there is no official statement yet, it is still possible to speculate whether an anime will have a new season or not. I have speculated taking into account the availability of the manga’s source material, popularity, disc sales, and financial data.

The Dorohedoro anime is nominated for the 5th Crunchyroll Anime Awards 2021. Dan Yuichiro Hayashi, as the director of the series, said he would make season 2 possible if the first season was successful. So does it really work?

Manga Status

Manga written by Q Hayashida completed on September 12, 2018 ago. However, there is still enough source material to keep the anime going for another season.

In fact it seems enough to get to season three. The manga currently consists of 23 volumes published between November 30, 2000, and September 12, 2018. 8 of these 23 volumes were adapted into the first anime season.

While there is good news that the anime has had enough source material to adapt, it is a shame that the manga is no longer ongoing. Because the anime series is also an advertisement for the manga, and the finished manga has gradually reduced the advertising work.

Disc Sales and Popularity

Dorohedoro is at position 414 on the Myanimelist popularity ranking. This popularity is above average for an anime coming out in 2020, and the second season is promising when we look at it in terms of these ratings.

However, this data may not always reflect current popularity. Luckily, when I look at search volume on Google, I see parallel popularity. We can say that Dorohedoro is more sought after than many updated anime.

Other Netflix anime with similar search popularity, such as Beastars, came on screen with the second season and was renewed for the third as well. Besides that, Dorohedoro itself has better reviews than Beastars on MyAnimeList and IMDb. From this point of view, the possibility for a second season of this anime is possible.

When I see Twitter account the official Dorohedoro anime, I found that even though the manga has finished, they are still continuing to work on advertising and product promotion.

An active team is still making efforts for this series. However, judging from the number of followers, I see that the popularity in Japan is lower than in the rest of the world.

The anime is only followed by around 50K people in Japan, and when we look at anime that have received new season approval, we can safely say that we usually see at least twice that number of followers.

However, I also attribute that to the fact that Netflix-licensed anime isn’t always popular in Japan. This anime is actually quite successful worldwide, because it is registered on Netflix.

Finally, the disc sales of the anime were below expectations. Dorohedoro sold 2781 units alone but 2020 was a very rough year in terms of anime disc sales.

Despite the poor disc sales, the Netflix factor shouldn’t be skipped. Netflix has an exclusive distribution contract for the Dorohedro anime, and this is a good factor that has pushed production of the second season forward tremendously. Netflix is ​​famous for investing a lot of money in production.

When will Dorohedro Season 2 be released?

There is already strong popularity, and the manga series has enough source material to create a new season. I think Netflix and the studio will also be excited for a second season.

If there is an update in the near future, we might get to see Dorohedro Season 2 towards the end of 2023. However, since there were no updates at the time this article was written, this is just my personal speculation, and I will of course update this article when official information becomes available.

Article Update June 2, 2023

As of now, there is no word on a Dorohedoro season 2 update, but if I may give my guess on the release date, it will likely be in the fall of 2024.

Currently, Studio MAPPA is working on the highly anticipated Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 and until it finishes airing in 2023, don’t expect to see the Dorohedoro anime return anytime soon.

The first season ended around chapter 40 of the manga, meaning there was more than enough material for Dorohedoro season 2 to air for a total of 24 episodes. Though usually, that’s something to be decided by viewership and demand.

It’s also worth noting that Dorohedoro s2 could have come earlier if MAPPA turned over the work to some other studio, and considering how busy the studio has been with Chainsaw Man Season 2 and Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2, this is a good possibility I think.
